Meet Jesse

Jesse Chism is a State Representative out of Memphis, TN. He represents House District 85 in the 114th General Assembly. Jesse is a native Tennessean and worked in the nonprofit sector, and an educator in Memphis. He is currently a real estate investor rehabilitating houses and providing affordable housing to families in need.
Rep. Chism received a B.S. in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing /Economics from Morehouse College . Jesse developed a strong sense of devotion for education and service to others from watching his mother, who was an educator for many years, and his father, who was a businessman in the community; a community in which he has lived in for over four decades.
Since being elected to Office of State Representative, Jesse has been appointed as Chairman of the Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators and serves tirelessly on multiple committees that impact YOU. This experience and training have given Representative Jesse Chism a deep appreciation for public service and a heart to help others. He lives by his family motto: “Service Above Self” and political motto: "Let's Fight Together."

Small businesses are the backbone of our neighborhoods. As a majority of our businesses are small businesses, we have to strengthen them. We have to create an environment where the entrepreneurial spirit can thrive and distress neighborhoods. Through education, innovation, and resources, we can make this happen.
Every family deserves a safe, stable place to call home. The policies I support increase affordable housing, protect renters from unfair practices, and invest in repairing aging homes in our communities. We can build a Tennessee where long-time residents aren’t priced out of the neighborhoods they helped create.
The children of Memphis should not have a ZIP code determining the quality of their education. I’m fighting for fully funded public schools, better pay and support for teachers, and classrooms with the tools students need to succeed. When we invest in education, we invest in the future of Memphis and all of Tennessee.
No one should have to choose between paying a bill and seeing a doctor. I support expanding access to affordable healthcare, lowering prescription drug costs, and strengthening mental health and familial resources. Healthy families build stronger, safer communities.
Justice must be fair, not just for a few. We not only want to be hard on crime, but smart on crime. I’m working to reform a system that too often targets communities of color and low-income families, push for alternatives to incarceration, and expand reentry programs so returning citizens have real opportunities. Safer communities start with smart, compassionate justice.
